HIV Symptoms in Women

HIV symptoms in women can occur during any phase of HIV infection. However, in some cases the symptoms do not occur at all. Even if they occur, these symptoms usually resemble the symptoms of flu or other infections, so they are often ignored and expected to go away spontaneously. The fact is that they actually go away without causing any complications. This may lead a person to conclude that there is nothing wrong. This is very dangerous, because HIV will continue to spread, even if there are no symptoms at all. Asymptomatic phase is dangerous because a person may believe that everything is all right and he/she can infect someone else, without even knowing about it.

HIV Symptoms in Women

After being exposed to HIV, a woman will probably experience some symptoms. The most common ones are:

- Infection of pelvis
– Pelvis inflammation
– Genital warts
– Herpes
– Genital ulcers
– Flu-like symptoms

These symptoms will probably occur during the first couple of weeks. After that, they will go away, but the infection will continue to spread. Some women can experience the symptoms like:

- Constant physical weakness
– Lymph nodes swelling
– White spots inside the mouth
– Loss of appetite
– Significant weight loss
– Fever accompanied with night sweats
– Considerable changes in menstrual cycle
– Skin rashes that can be very hard to treat

Keep in mind that these symptoms should not be neglected. After these symptoms, asymptomatic phase will start and this is the most dangerous phase of HIV infection because it shows no symptoms and the person believes that there is nothing to treat. Asymptomatic phase can last for a decade, and by the time this phase is over, it will probably be too late to treat HIV infection.

We know that early diagnose is the most important thing for people with HIV. If the disease is detected early enough, the chances for successful treatment will be greater. Today, there are medications that have proven to be very effective in treating HIV infection. These are called antiretroviral medications and they have made significant progress in treating this infection. These medications are capable of preventing mother-to-child transmission, which is an incredible accomplishment in medical science. This way, HIV positive mothers are able to have healthy children, which is one of the most important things for any woman. Antiretroviral medications can considerably prolong a patient’s life. Thanks to these medications, people with HIV can live for decades. However, this is only possible if the virus is detected in time. HIV tests should be done even if you feel perfectly fine. There is no reason for avoiding the test. This simple procedure can save your life. Early detection can also protect other people around you because you will know more about prevention and you will change certain habits. If you experience any of these symptoms, visit your doctor to make sure everything is all right. Even if you are perfectly healthy, you must check your health regularly.
